On 7th September 2014 we held a special service in the Park to commemorate the beginning of World War I.

As part of this commemoration, we asked to hear your personal memories and stories about members of your family or friends who lost their lives in the Great War.

Private Herbert Buckley

Chapel Road, Sale.

11th Battalion Cheshire Regiment – Killed in Action in Belgium 21 April 1918 aged 25.

He was reported missing and then later “missing believed killed in action”. Some of his comrades later visited his parents and told them that they had seen his body, with others, as they were retreating from a German counter attack. However, his body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot  Cemetery Memorial in Zonnebeke.

Manchester Regiment – Killed in Action 1916 aged 21.

Private Edward Carroll

Manchester Regiment – Died 23 June 1918 aged 25.
Commemorated at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Moston.

Lance Corporal Francis Carroll

East Lancashire Regiment – Wounded in Acton. Died of his wounds 10 February 1919 aged 25.
Commemorated at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Moston.

9th Battalion Cheshire Regiment – Killed in Acton in France 3 November 1916 aged 21.

Private James Goodliffe

Fairy Lane, Sale
12th Battalion King’s (Liverpool Regiment). – Killed in Action in Belgium 29 February 1916 aged 20.

Corporal Charles Henry Goodliffe

8th Batt. East Lancashire Regiment- Killed in Action in Belgium 31 July 1917 aged 29.

Private John Thomas Goodliffe

3rd Battalion Cheshire Regiment – Died 15 November 1918 aged 21.

The three Goodliffes listed here were brothers.

James Schofield

James Schofield killed at the Battle of Loos in September 1915, aged 37.  Left a wife and 5 children.

Owen Hogben

Owen Hogben.  Killed in Flanders in 1917

John Graham

John Graham Royal Field Artillery died in a military hospital in Preston in 1917 age 27. He died three weeks before his son was born. He left a widow and three children. He was a Sale Moor boy all his life and is remembered on the war memorials in Sale and St Annes church. He is buried in a military grave in Brooklands cemetery.

2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment. Killed in Action 3rd October 1915. aged 30.  Loos Memorial (Dud Corner Cemetery).
